Our commitment to protecting Jersey's endangered seabirds
Once a familiar sight on Jersey’s north coast, puffin numbers have declined by 95% over the past century, from over 500 to just 6 - only 3 breeding pairs.
The numbers have dropped alarmingly due to habitat loss, invasive predators, and changes in their marine food supply. These much-loved seabirds are now at real risk of disappearing from our coast altogether.
We recognise the importance of working with our island community to support National Trust Jersey and their Seabird Sanctuary, restoring the seabird habitat and enhancing the breeding opportunities for puffins and many other birds.
As part of our partnership with National Trust Jersey, we’re excited to launch a series of initiatives to help raise awareness and funds for their important seabird conservation work.
One of our key efforts includes a limited run of puffin plushies, which will be available at events throughout the year. Each plushie comes with a label featuring a QR code linking directly to our Puffin Project fundraising page, where all donations go straight to National Trust Jersey.
National Trust Jersey's 'Birds On The Edge' partnership aims to create Europe’s first eco-sanctuary - the 'Seabird Sanctuary', where threatened wildlife is safe from invasive predators like rats and ferrets. The charity's work involves habitat restoration and enhancement of breeding opportunities for puffins and many other species.
Extensive research has been carried out into the conservation options available, and it was concluded that a 'predator-exclusion' fence would prove most effective. This 1km-long fence will stop predators from burrowing under or climbing over, creating a safe sanctuary for the endangered species.
