Team Fairway: Lockdown legends, cricket and the personal touch

7 Sep 2020

Fairway Group continues to be fuelled by teamwork - our entrepreneurial culture is reinforced as we move out of our virtual world to our physical world.

We continue to endeavour to be the partner of choice for trust funds and pensions. Our ethos remains focused on our clients, our people and our community. As we check in with our clients and assess how covid-19 has affected them, what they anticipate for the future and how they rank Fairway as a service provider, we are delighted to note that their feedback remains strong, with the theme of “teamwork” a common thread among their comments.

It has always been the people that make a business and at Fairway, we feel truly fortunate to have the experience and calibre of those who endeavour to “go above and beyond”.

With our Lockdown Legends, we saw the ice cream deliveries to the entire team at their homes with a special stop to the front line workers, weekly video updates from the business, Monthly Mingles as we shared a virtual drink together, corporate yoga and as lockdown eased, the 5k Corporate Cup saw some super fast run times. As we re-opened our Bath Street office, homemade Fairway masks and goodie bags were assembled for a rotational basis return.

The team continue to work together in the community as we support various sports and our chosen charity The Shelter Trust. Each week members of the team give up their time to pick up excess food from M&S and deliver to the shelter. Covid-19 has put additional pressure on their work with reductions in donations and increased demand for homeless accommodation, the team support is welcomed from Fairway.

We are delighted to have been involved with the initiative to get more people on their bikes with RIDE jersey and we have been really encouraged by the work that Cycle4Jersey are promoting. Our sponsored triathlete, Ollie Turner continues to impress as the winner of the Island Games qualifier. We are proud of his progress and look forward to seeing how far he can take his professional career.

2020 is the fourth year of our partnership with Jersey Cricket Board (JCB), the format has evolved over time and we are excited to be a continual part of the journey for the next generation of talent on the Island.

The JCB's programme provides more competition for the developing athletes who are invited to take part, they will be guided by their captains and island player mentors. This year sees the launch of the Fairway Super Series – Twenty20 matches spread over two weekends and we look forward to witnessing what will be a display from the best players as they battle it out to take the series win.

Each team will also have the opportunity to raise funds for their chosen charities which include; The Shelter Trust, Beresford Street Kitchen, Lord and Lady Taverners and Every Child Our Future.

On a personal note I have been so lucky to have been surrounded by my family, some holidaying from the UK and others back from their studies in the USA, despite missing some from Ireland, we certainly made the most of the time together.

On the racing front this was my first season having joined Big Maggys’s team which then meant a season of bike races to enjoy, the Jersey Triathlon club also managed to host the Island Games qualifier, a tough day out for me but completed all the same. So it’s a time for reflection, note the progress and work out what is next. What I do know is that it will be an onwards pursuit to be the best I can be, build upon the foundations and drive myself and the business forward to the next chapter.

A quote from Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami sums it up for me...

'And once the storm is over, you won't remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won't even be sure, whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm, you won't be the same person who walked in. That's what this storm's all about.'
